Rhinophyma Laser Treatment

What is rhynophyma?

Rhinophyma is characterized by an enlarged, fibrous nose with prominent pores and excessive redness. Excessive consumption of alcohol is not the cause of rhinophyma as often stated, though it can exacerbate the condition. Instead, rhinophyma is a variant of rosacea and is often associated with other signs and symptoms of rosacea. Rhinophyma may be diagnosed without testing, but a skin biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. Due its unsightly appearance, rhinophyma often undermines a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. When severe, it can interfere with breathing by decreasing air flow through the nostrils.

What is the CO2RE laser?

We harness the CO2RE laser for rhinophyma repair in St. Louis, MO because it effectively eradicates undesirable areas of skin, allowing us to reshape and sculpt the nose. This ablative laser treatment uses an infrared beam of light to precisely heat and vaporize thin layers of skin instantaneously. In severe forms of rhinophyma, a completely ablative mode is used to reshape the nose. In milder forms of rhinophyma, a partially ablative (fractionated) mode of the laser can be used to drills millions of tiny columns in the skin and reduce bulk. Regardless of the mode used, the CO2RE is a comfortable laser procedure with a high satisfaction rate.

How do I prepare for treatment?

You may be prescribed creams to apply to your skin for several weeks before resurfacing with the CO2RE laser.

What will happen during the treatment?

CO2RE laser resurfacing is usually performed under local anesthesia when used for rhinophyma repair in St. Louis, MO. The treated areas will be bandaged at the end of the procedure.

What should I expect during recovery?

There may be a lot of swelling, oozing and bruising as the skin heals, which may take 5-10 days after a milder treatment and 10-14 days after a more aggressive treatment. Itching and feelings of tightness are common in this recovery period and may last for several weeks.

What about the results?
