What is a Glycolic Peel

Glycolic acid is a natural alpha hydroxyl acid derived from fruit acid found in sugar cane and citrus fruits. It is used in varying concentrations as a peeling solution to reduce visible signs of aging and sun damage. This peel removes the top layer of skin, giving the skin an even-toned, radiant and glowing appearance. Removal of damaged cells also stimulates new cell growth.peel st louis

Who is a candidate for a Glycolic Peel?

The glycolic peels can be used on light to dark skin tones and acne-prone skin as well as on oily, normal, dry or combination skin types. The glycolic peel can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands and even the arms and legs. If you have fine lines and wrinkles, the glycolic acid minimizes their appearance. This is also an excellent choice for uneven skin tone, blemishes and freckles. As board certified dermatologists, Dr. Hruza and Dr. Behshad also use glycolic peels in the prevention and treatment of acne and on areas of sun-damaged skin that can potentially contain pre-cancerous cells.

Results

Typically you will see results after just one peel, with softer and smoother skin. Many patients, however, elect to undergo a series of light peels to achieve greater improvement in skin tone and texture. For optimal effect it is recommended that glycolic peels are performed weekly for six weeks.

Procedure

Glycolic acid peels take about 20 minutes. Initially, your face will be thoroughly cleansed. The glycolic peel will then be applied and allowed to penetrate for several minutes prior to being neutralized and removed with an alkaline solution or water. You may feel a tingly sensation during treatment. When your treatment is complete, the skin will be pink and you can return to your activities immediately after leaving our St. Louis office.

What are side effects/complications?

When performed in a physician’s office, glycolic acid peels are very safe. Occasionally, patients with very sensitive skin may have mild temporary redness or irritation. At the Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center, we are dedicated to providing ongoing care to ensure a fast, safe, and smooth recovery.

What can I expect after treatment?

After a glycolic peel, your skin will have a fresh pink glow. To protect your healing skin, a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 should be applied several times throughout each day. For best results, use of physician strength skincare will continue to slough off dead skin cells and rejuvenate the skin after the treatment. Based on your skin exam and VISIA™ skin analysis, our physicians and skin care consultant will determine the regimen that is right for you.
