What is Juvederm®?

Juvederm® is an FDA approved injectable medication that fills lines and wrinkles; re-contours, rejuvenates, volumizes and restores the face; and gives a more youthful appearance to other areas of the body, such as the hands. Laser and Dermatologic Surgery Center knows that volume loss is a major contributor to an aged appearance. Using a small needle, our St Louis doctors inject the filler into each area that requires treatment.

How it works:

Juvederm® is made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that exists naturally in the skin. It binds water, thereby providing support, volume, and hydration to the skin to give you the best results.

Side Effects:

Side effects of Juvederm® are typically minor and temporary, but include:

  • Bruising (taking aspirin or similar medications increases this risk)
  • Redness/swelling
  • Pain (to reduce discomfort, an anesthetic cream is typically applied to the treatment area, and there is anesthetic mixed in the filler material as well)
  • Bumps (Juverderm® filler substances can infrequently cause bumps that may persist for a few weeks to several months)
  • Vascular occlusion (though unlikely, it is possible for the needle to be placed through a blood vessel, which could impair circulation to nearby sites)

Aging impacts different regions of the face in difference ways. That’s why there are several formulations of Juvéderm®. At St. Louis’ Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center, we can use the injectable dermal filler to add lost volume back into the temple areas and beneath the eyes, restore youthful contours in the mid-face, smooth out moderate to severe smile and laugh lines, enhance the lips, and improve jawline definition.

Counteract Aging with Dermal Fillers

Injectable dermal fillers are helpful for addressing multiple signs of aging. The skin is the body’s largest organ. When healthy, youthful, and properly nourished, it has abundant levels of collagen and elastin, as well as the ability to move easily and spring back to its normal position after being pulled out of shape. Newborn babies, for example, have smooth, ultra-soft, and bouncy skin that is rich in collagen, the protein that provides support and firmness to connective tissues like the skin.

When levels of collagen, elastin, healthy fat, and other important substances drop—which can happen as early as a person’s 20s, but is usually noticeable in their 30s and 40s—the skin can become visibly stretched, thin, and poorly supported, allowing creases and wrinkles to appear. Smoking, sun exposure, and other lifestyle and external factors can further damage the existing collagen fibers. The resulting fine lines and creases—known as static wrinkles—are corrected with synthetic and natural skin fillers.

In addition to developing lines, loose, aging skin pulls away from the underlying tissues and sunken areas appear, causing the face to lose its youthful, heart-shaped slimness and look of high cheekbones. Dermal fillers injected into the mid-face area can counter these changes, restoring more rounded and elevated cheeks and creating a sharper jawline. Dermal fillers can also plump lips that have shrunk with time or have always been naturally thin.

The results from dermal fillers are both subtle and long-lasting, making the treatment an excellent option for most aging faces.

JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers are smooth-consistency gels capable of restoring volume to skin and minimizing moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, mainly on the central area and lower face. Each member of the JUVÉDERM® family of dermal fillers is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps regulate volume and hydration for youthful suppleness. Since the skin naturally produces less hyaluronic acid as we age, the resulting lack of moisture causes it to dry out and have a more wrinkled and weakened appearance.

What Are the Benefits of JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is a safe and effective dermal filler, making it an ideal non-surgical option for women and men who want to address the severity of their facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds that stretch between the sides of the nose and corners of the mouth. Unlike many hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, which have a granular consistency, JUVÉDERM® is smooth, which allows for easy injection and natural-looking, balanced results that are visible right away.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra, one of the dermal fillers we offer, allows for versatility in contouring and volumizing. JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, another form of the injectable, is effective at correcting deeper and more severe wrinkles.

There are dermal fillers for every type of fine line, allowing for a completely personalized treatment tailored by your injector to meet your needs. The results from these dermal fillers can make you look naturally younger and refreshed for up to a year or longer.

JUVÉDERM® is also the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler to be proven safe and effective for persons of color.

JUVÉDERM® Procedure Details and Recovery Time

Injections take approximately 15 minutes to administer, and JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers require minimal recovery time. For the first 24 hours following a treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and the consumption of alcoholic beverages. This will help minimize the risk of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the dermal filler injection sites.

Some mild, temporary side effects—such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps—may occur after a JUVÉDERM® dermal filler session, but these usually clear up on their own within a week. Any swelling at the injection site can be minimized with an ice pack for a brief period. We will tell you when makeup may be applied after your treatment.

JUVÉDERM® Results

Many patients see an improvement right away in the treatment area and only need one dermal filler injection session to achieve their optimal results. Other patients find that touch-up sessions are required.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® dermal fillers consist of a water-based gel filled with tiny spheres of a synthetic form of a mineral called calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), found naturally in the teeth and bones. These dermal fillers are FDA approved to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles, folds, and creases around the nose and mouth by augmenting the skin’s own natural collagen supply.

What Are the Benefits of Radiesse®?

Radiesse® is a safe, effective, and long-lasting alternative to injectable collagen and other natural skin fillers, as it not only smooths wrinkles by adding volume, but also encourages collagen production to gradually contour to the face for an overall younger and fuller appearance. With just one or two Radiesse® treatments, you can enjoy a beautiful, natural look that lasts. The dermal fillers are absorbed naturally by the body over time.

Radiesse® dermal fillers can be used on many areas of the face and body. Numerous studies have shown the injectables to be especially effective for filling and correcting smile lines, nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin), and other wrinkles around the nose and mouth. The fillers can also be used to treat depressed acne scars and oral commissures.

Radiesse® Procedure Details and Recovery Time

For this dermal filler treatment, your injector will first clean the treatment area, then administer a series of quick injections with a fine needle. Sessions typically take about 30 minutes and require only a local anesthetic to improve comfort. The amount of downtime required after a session depends on the treatment site, but is minimal.

Patients typically need only one or two treatments to achieve the full effect of Radiesse®. We may recommend a follow-up appointment to determine whether additional sessions or other dermal fillers may be beneficial.

Radiesse® Results

Radiesse® results are visible right after the injection session and can last for up to a year or more, and touch-up treatments can prolong the dermal filler’s effects. Studies have shown that patients require fewer re-treatments with Radiesse® than with other dermal fillers.

Restylane®

Restylane® is another brand of hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, intended for reducing the depth of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Fillers in the Restylane® line work especially well to address nasolabial folds that stretch from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Additionally, Restylane® fillers replenish lost volume in the skin to restore youthful contours to the face, lifting and supporting tissues without surgery. The outcome is a younger, smoother look with fewer lines and wrinkles. Results are visible right away and long-lasting.

What Are the Benefits of Restylane®?

Restylane® is a clear, synthetic gel made with hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar found throughout the body. Hyaluronic acid works with collagen to support the skin and keep it smooth and supple, and the hyaluronic acid in Restylane® has been modified so that it lasts longer.

Restylane® Procedure Details and Recovery Time

Restylane® dermal fillers take only few minutes to inject and require only a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. During the first 48 hours after your session, do not massage or rub the treated area. Also, avoid exposing it to intense heat or cold for the first few days to avoid swelling. Once Restylane® has integrated into the body, it will adjust to your normal body temperature.

Restylane® Results

The effects of Restylane® injections generally last six months, with specific results depending on the exact dermal filler used, as well as a range of factors, such as the patient’s lifestyle, age, structure of the skin, degree of correction desired, and injection techniques used. Follow-ups can make the improvements last longer. Many patients choose to have a touch-up within six months to a year after the original dermal fillers session.
