You no longer need to take time off in order to define your jawline, lift your eyebrows, tighten your neck, or reduce wrinkles around the mouth and cheeks. In addition, it is a safe complement to any other cosmetic procedures such as fillers, neuromodulators (i.e. Botox®), and fractionated lasers. The technology works best for mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, and may help delay the need for more invasive surgical procedures.
How does it work?
Thermage® works by heating skin all the way down to the fat, causing collagen fibers to contract and stimulating collagen regeneration. The result is a rejuvenated face with more youthful contours.
What are the side effects?
Radiofrequency energy has been safely used in hospitals all over the country for decades, and the Thermage® device was cleared by the FDA for cosmetic indications. Studies showed a very small incidence of minor side effects:
- Small heat blisters
- Indentation. These are usually temporary but in very rare cases may be permanent.
- Altered sensation. This rare occurrence has been reported to resolve within a week.
Is there any downtime?
You may return to your normal activities immediately after the Thermage® treatment. Makeup can be applied immediately after the treatment session. Minimal redness is seen in some patients after treatment, but it generally disappears within several hours. Occasionally mild swelling is noticed after the treatment, but it disappears in two or three days.
When will I see results?
You will see a little bit of tightening right away with Thermage®, but most tightening occurs gradually over a period of four to six months. While treatment results have been observed to last for at least 2 years, studies indicate that the beneficial changes to skin collagen can last over 2 years in some cases. As with virtually all skin restorative techniques, including surgical facelifts, the original aging symptoms may slowly return as the aging and sun damage process continues.
How many treatments will I need?
A single treatment can produce good results, as shown in large studies. New research is under way to assess the benefits of more than one treatment session to achieve better, faster, or more consistent results.
What does the Thermage® procedure feel like?
With each touch of the treatment tip, you will experience a brief intense heating sensation as the collagen in deep layers of your skin is tightened. To protect your skin and make the treatment more comfortable, a cooling spray is delivered before, during, and after each application of the treatment tip. Additionally, the treatment tip gently vibrates to help further reduce discomfort.
- Wash face before arrival.
